  • Constipation is associated with trouble in passing stools. This condition arises due to any disturbance in the digestive track. Due to constipation, excreta gets collected in the body. Medically, constipation signifies failure to discharge waste matter from the body, on a regular basis. In ayurveda, it is referred to as Aanaaha. Koshtha baddhata is another term used to describe constipation in Ayurveda.

    Types of constipation

    The two main types of constipation are occasional and chronic.

    Occasional constipation is a short term condition that is not very frequent, and does not cause much stress on the system. It can be relieved by bringing certain modifications to diet and lifestyle. Over-the- counter medications are also of use.

    In chronic constipation, the typical symptoms of constipation are characterized by straining, hard or lumpy stools and the symptoms last for 3 months.

    Other types include travel-related, age-related, pregnancy-related, chronic idiopathic and functional constipation.

    Symptoms of constipation

    • Dry and painful bowel movements
    • Abdominal pain
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Weight loss
    • Sluggishness
    • Diarrhoea
    • Abdominal swelling
    • Loss of appetite

    Chronic constipation could lead to haemorrhoids, anal fissures, rectal prolapse, fecal incontinence, feeling of sluggishness and blood in stools.

    The symptoms include incomplete evacuation of the bowel or passing of hard stools and may be paired with pain in the stomach, flatulence, heaviness of body, indigestion, , lack of appetite and acid eructation (belching). The causes of constipation are many—constitution of the individual (prakriti), habit of suppressing the urge over long periods (vega dhaarana), absence or non-availability of articles habitually used before defecation, such as smoking tobacco, drinking coffee or tea, frequent use of laxatives and purgatives etc.


    REMEDIAL ACTION
    Home Remedies
    a)Put together a powdered preparation of dried ginger root, long pepper, black pepper, and black salt in equal quantities. Have 1 teaspoon of this concotion before going to bed with lukewarm water and 2 to 3 teaspoons of psyllium husk.


    b)Drink a glass of lukewarm water with 1-2 teaspoons of honey in it 3-4 times a day.


    c)Put together a powdered mixture of celery seeds, cumin seeds, and asafetida in equal quantities and have ½ teaspoon 15 minutes before meals twice a day.

    AYURVEDIC MEDICATION
    a)Castor oil is not only useful for daily bowl discharge but also has curative values, 20-30 ml of this oil is to be taken with warm milk.


    b)Triphala powder is very popularly used by the ayurvedic physicians for the treatment of constipation.


    c)In cases of severe constipation, ayurvedic detoxification procedures like Virechana karma (purgation therapy), Vasthi karma (enema therapy, Udvartana massage is advised.

    Q 1. I am 6 months pregnant. I occasionally get constipation, for which the doctor has prescribed me a liquid laxative. He has advised me to consume it when the constipation is severe. Is there any natural medication that is safe and effective?
