    • Chronic cough is persistent cough that lasts more than 8 weeks and maybe a symptom of an underlying medical condition.
    • Productive cough produces mucus or sputum, and should not be suppressed as it clears mucus from the lungs.
    • Non-productive cough is dry and does not produce sputum. It usually develops towards the end of a cold or after exposure to dust or smoke irritants.

    Cough – the Ayurveda perspective

Kasa (cough) is of five types – vata, pitta, kapha, ksataja due to injury, and ksayja due to loss or reduced element. Each of the symptoms is described below.

Vata type symptoms include cardiac pain, pain in chest, tired look, loss of strength, inability to speak, frequent urge to cough and dry cough.

Pitta type symptoms include burning sensation in the chest and body, dry mouth, desire to drink water, occasional vomiting and pale face.

Kapha type symptoms include sticky mouth, headache, a feeling of heaviness in the body due to phlegm, itching and anorexia. A lot of phlegm is expelled in this type of cough.

Ksataja may be caused due to excessive sex, carrying heavy weights and other activities where the breath is held for long periods. It is associated with continuous coughing, spitting of blood, pain in finger joints, increased thirst and pigeon-like voice.

Ksayaya occurs due to the diet that is not wholesome, lack of exercise and suppression of natural urges. The patient complains of pain all over the body. There is reduced muscle tissue, and the patient spits blood and pus. This stage may be borderline tuberculosis.

Sign and Symptoms vary depending upon type of cough. Symptoms of cold running nose, sore throat, headache, and sinus pressure. Infectious cough symptoms are fever, chills, body aches, sputum etc. Non- infectious cough symptoms due to irritants in environment are cough with wheezing which worsen with passage of time, difficulty in breathing. Cough associated with Reflus disorder is associated with sensation of heartburn. Accumulation of mucus in respiratory tract leads to Vatta (Vayu) dosha as well . Kapha-Pitta dosha is primarily accountable for cough and cold. Other causes are virus, infectious, Reflux disorder, exposure to cold and humid weather. Cough may be with or without the production of sputum (dry cough) and both type of cough are to be treated differently.
