When exams are around the corner, it is generally a period of anxiety and worry for children as well as parents. With more and more competition in all areas of education, it is common for children to suffer from stress. Stress is one of the causes for lowered immunity in children, which makes them prone to various disease-causing pathogens and microorganisms.

The increasing pressure of studies makes children irritable. It affects their sleep and appetite and makes them generally depressed. Parents need to understand such signs and help children cope with issues like stress and peer pressure.

Ayurveda offers some of the most effective and unique forms of treatment for children. Herbal preparations developed for children improve strength and immunity and enhance overall health and wellbeing. Being healthy in body also ensures that they are sharp in mind.

Common ailments that affect children include cough, cold, stomach aches, fever and headaches.

Let us examine how Ayurveda helps children fight such diseases.

Kaumarbhratya is one of the eight branches of Ayurveda, which is especially dedicated to the health of children. Certain Ayurvedic tonics and medications are known to develop immunity in children and sharpen their intelligence as well.

Treatment of specific disease conditions

1. Low immunity
Chawanprash: It is a composition of amla, ashwagandha, asparagus, cardamom, cinnamon bark, clove, Indian rose chestnut, ghee, honey and raisins. It has anti-oxidant properties and strengthens the body's immune system, thereby offering protection from everyday infections, cough, cold and stress. It has been derived from a 2,500-year-old Ayurvedic formula, and is totally chemical-free, natural and safe. An immunity booster for all age groups, it is available in various flavours. It is also safe for diabetics.

Ashwagandha is known to boost the immune system and improve stress tolerance. It has strong anti-oxidant properties and increases energy and stamina. It is known to control everyday stress, improve physical strength, mental alertness, immunity and overall wellbeing.

Badam oil is obtained from ripe kernels of Prunus amygdalus. This 100% pure Badam Oil, extracted from best quality almonds, nourishes dry skin and prevents allergies. It can be both consumed and applied on the body.

Aravindasava is a general tonic that prevents digestive disorders in children and promotes growth. It contains kumuda, ushira mool, gambhari tvak, neelotpala, manjishth, ela, bala, jatamansi and mustaka.

2.Cough and cold, respiratory diseases
  • A cough syrup composed of tulsi, mulethi, banaphsa, kantkari, talispatra, sunthi, pippali, vasaka, shati, pudina satva and shudha madhu is effective in controlling cough and relieving throat irritation.
  • For instant relief from all types of cough, a composition of shudh madhu (honey), pudina satva (mint oil), Nilgiri taila (eucalyptus oil) and karpoor (camphor), is recommended.
  • For cough associated with breathlessnessand for allergic cough, a composition of shirees chaal (Albizzia lebback), kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), karkatshringi (Pistacia integrima) and vasaka leaves is beneficial.
  • A combination of sitopaladi churna, elaichi (Elettaria cardamomum), vanslochan ( Bambusa arundinacia), dalchini (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), madhu and sharkara is recommended for wet, productive and unproductive cough.
  • For relief from throat infections, sore throat, hoarseness and cough; a combination of khadira sar, pushkar mool, karkat shringi, katphala, brahamdandi, haritaki, lavanga, shunthi, maricha, pippali, ativisha, krishna jeerak, javasaka, guduchi, brihati, kantakari, vibheetaka, and khadira sar is indicated.
  • Vasavaleha is indicated for symptoms associated with tuberculosis-like cough, breathlessness, chest pain, cardiac pain, vomiting of blood (haemoptysis) and fever.
  • Sitopaladi churna is recommended for dry cough and is made from herbs like pippali, which is one of the best expectorants found in nature.
  • Talisadi churna and vasasava are used to treat for wet cough and dyspepsia.
  • Agastya haritak avaleha is indicated for bronchitis, breathlessness, hiccups and other respiratory conditions.
  • Chitrak haritaki is advised in the treatment of cough, chronic cold, intestinal worms, loss of appetite, flatulence, breathlessness and other respiratory conditions.
  • Shwaasamrit strengthens the respiratory system and increases immunity. It is an Ayurvedic formulation for breathlessness, chronic cough, cold and bronchitis. It increases air flow to the lungs.
  • For throat infections, sore throat, hoarseness and cough; a composition of khadira sar, pushkar mool, karkat shringi, katphala, brahamdandi, haritaki, lavanga, syzigium aromaticum, shunthi, maricha, pippali, ativisha, krishna jeerak, javasaka alhagi pseudalhagi, guduchi, brihati, kantakari, vibheetaka, khadira sar and Acacia catechu is very effective.
  • 10 ml of a composition that contains extracts derived from – shirees chaal (Albizzia lebback) 820 mg, kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) 630 mg, gokshur (Tribulus terrestris) 630 mg, yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) 450 mg, karkatshringi (Pistacia integrima) 180 mg and vasaka leaves (Adhatoda vasica) 180 mg – is very effective for cough associated with breathlessness and/or allergic cough.

3.Digestive disorders

  • A composition of kumuda, ushira mool, gambhari tvak, neelotpala, manjishth, ela, bala, jatamansi, mastaka and shweta savira improves digestion in children and promotes growth. It is recommended as a general tonic for children.
  • A composition of anjeer, kishmish, ajwain, palas beej & bidang, vach, aamaltas and sanai is good to treat digestive problems in children and improve immunity. Anjeer is good for the liver. It acts as a cooling and soothing agent for the stomach and has high nutritive value. Draksha or kishmish contains essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron in an easy-to-assimilate form. It is an expectorant, laxative and blood purifier, useful in treating fevers and colds arising due to thrush in children. Ajwain is known to prevent flatulence, indigestion, colic dyspepsia & diarrhea. Palas beej and bidang expel intestinal worms, while vach prevents flatulence and loss of appetite. It is useful in treating dyspepsia and choleric diarrhea. Amaltas acts as a laxative, especially for habitual constipation. Sanai, containing saunf, unnab and gulab jal, is a mild laxative.
  • For symptoms of hyperacidity and gassiness due to stress, it is advisable to take pudina satva along with lemon fizz that contains sarjikshara, pudina satva and nimbu satva. A composition of healing ingredients such as trivirt, bhringaraja, guduchi and yashtimadhu provides quick and effective relief from acidity and gas.
  • Sat isabgol contains 100% dietary fibre which helps to reduce cholesterol on regular use in addition to treating constipation
  • Triphala is a combination of three well known herbs - amla, harade and bahera. These three fruits help produce smooth bowel movements and relieve constipation.
