About Rashes in Babies

Skin is the most exposed part of the body. The main function of the skin is to protect the body from germs, dust and other elements that could harm the body. Since a newborns skin is under developed, it remains sensitive for the initial three years. Due to its sensitivity babies tend to be prone to skin infections and skin dryness. Therefore it is not uncommon for babies to have rashes often.

Symptoms and Causes
a) Babies can get heat rash, sometimes called prickly heat, when they are dressed too warmly or when the weather is very hot. This is a red or pink rash usually found on the body areas covered by clothing. It often itches and makes your baby uncomfortable.
b) Diaper rash is red and sore skin on the baby’s bottom or genitals. It is caused by wearing a wet diaper for a long time. Urine and stool can irritate the skin when the baby sleeps for many hours without waking up thus causing diaper rash. Sometimes an infection from bacteria or yeast can cause a diaper rash.
c) Many babies have a rash off and on around the mouth or on the chin. It’s caused by drooling.

b) One of the best remedies for rashes in infants is to add 1 to 2 teaspoons of Kumari (Aloe Vera) juice into the baby’s drinking water. This helps to relieve excess pitta in the body and can sooth the rash relatively fast. This works as a preventive or along with tropical treatment.
c) In case of heat rash, start by cooling your baby off. Loosen or remove his clothing and move him into an airy room or a shady spot. You might place him on a cotton towel, which can help absorb his sweat. Apply cool, wet washcloths to the area affected by the rash.
d) During a heat rash one can also take some gram flour and water in a cup, mix them well and make a smooth paste. Then apply it over the affected areas. Rub the paste waste well and then massage gently. Allow it to dry for 30 minutes . After that rinse it off with water. Do this 2-3 times a day
e) For Diaper rash, you can also take 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 cup of cold water and then dilute the baking soda by mixing them well. Soak it into the mixture and then apply this cloth to the diaper rashes. Do this 4-5 times every day to get good results.
