Diarrhoea is the passage of liquid or watery stools more than 3 times a day. Infant diarrhoea is very prevalent in India. Almost everywhere in India the morbidity and mortality due to this disease is creeping up. Despite of taking several precautionary measures by the health department of both state and central level the prevalence of this disease has crossed the alarming point. In rural India its prevalence is 82% where in urban area it is 68%. Whether it is rural or urban the basic fault rests at the level of general health consciousness by the common people. Diarrhoea in infants can make them weak as they get dehydrated easily and faster than adults.
SYMPTOMS & CAUSES
The symptoms of diarrhoea in infants are frequent watery stools, irritation, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, weakness in the body and vomiting. In severe cases even puss and blood passes in stool. The causes of infant diarrhoea are infection, viral gastroenteritis, bacteria etc.
Home Remedies for DIARRHOEA IN INFANTS
a) Do not self-medicate the infant with OTC drugs.
b) Mothers who are breastfeeding their infants, they should continue feeding them. This will save the child from getting dehydrated.
In babies above 6 months
a) Hydration is the Key. Homemade ORS, coconut water, rice kanji, dal, chaas, lassi with salt etc are recommended.
b) Milk is usually recommended unless the child has prolonged diarrhoea or lactose intolerance.
c) A baby's diarrhoea can usually be corrected simply by feeding the child some cooked apple. Remove the skin and seeds, cook the apple and add 1/2 teaspoon ghee, a pinch of cardamom, and a small pinch of ginger. Stir it up well and cool to room temperature.
d) Give pomegranate juice at regular intervals. This will help in rehydrating the child.
e) Prepare a mixture of honey and dried ginger powder and feed it to the infant every few hours. This will help curbing diarrhoea..
a) In Diarrhoea : Panchakola peya, Juice of Urad dal with little Pippali, Jira & Raal churna with Bilvapatra svaras, Decoction of Sunthi, Atish, Motha, Netrabala & Indrayava.
b) In Diarrhoea with Fever: Balchaturbhadrika Rasa, Dhatyakadi Churna Karkatadi Churna.
